What is ftp?

FTP - which stands for "file transfer protocal" - is the means used to transfer content (pages, additional features or any other changes) from you computer to your website server. There are many software packages that can do this for you, with prices ranging from free to eye-wateringly expensive. We would be happy to assist you in making a choice, based upon your requirements.

What is the Control Panel, and why do I need one?

The Control Panel is the means by which your web site is administered. Its functions include adding or amending email addresses, adding or amending ftp access to the site, setting up databases for use by the site, adding new features or software for use on the site. It is the back-end of the package that gives you control on how your site looks and behaves.

Why is ftp access restricted?

FTP access is not restricted as such. As a security measure, ftp access is time or ip address controlled on all the sites we set up. This protects the content of your site which can be defaced or deleted via ftp. Additionally malicious software could be installed on your site, via ftp, without your knowledge.
Logging onto you site to open ftp access only takes a few minutes and gives you total control over who and the time duration your site can be accessed. You can of course leave your site always accessable by ftp, although we would not recommend this option

Will you administer my site for me?

Yes. We understand that most of the people that we deal with do not want to be web designers or administrators. We will therefore, undertake to administer your site, and any features that you require and make changes on your behalf. This is a service over and above our original charges and will be billed seperately. We think you will find our charges for this to be competative and reasonable

What happens if I mess it all up?

The are features in place in the control panel that allow you to back up the site and any databases that you have. We encourage you to use these features regularly. If all else fails we are able to restore your site to the condition that it was in when it was handed over to you.
As the content of the site is the most expensive part of your investment in a website, please make sure that it is adaquately protected.
